Art One: Color Unit

Color has a profound effect on us even though we may not be aware of it. Every day our emotions, moods, mental acuity and even physical sensations—such as appetite—are influenced by the colors that surround us. During this unit, students will explore these ideas as they create their original artwork focusing on the element of color.

Color Psychology
Do different colors affect your mood?

Like death and taxes, there is no escaping color. It is ubiquitous. Yet what does it all mean? Why are people more relaxed in green rooms? Why do weightlifters do their best in blue gyms?

Color is a powerful communication tool and can be used to signal action, influence mood, and cause physiological reactions. Certain colors can raise blood pressure, increase metabolism, or cause eyestrain. Artists have long understood how color can dramatically affect moods, feelings and emotions.

Here is a fun website to explore the meaning of colors. http://www.color-meanings.com/category/color-meaning/

Some people perceive color in unusual ways. Check out this website to see an extrodinary example. https://www.ted.com/talks/neil_harbisson_i_listen_to_color

"There is no blue without yellow and without orange."

Vincent Van Gogh

Some artists, like Van Gogh, use color to express emotion in their work.
Other artists use color to add realism to their work.
