Art One Unit - Line
During this unit, students will examine the element of line. They will become aware that line is common to both the natural and manufactured enviroment. Additionally, students study and practice techniques of drawing with line.
Below are the assignments for the Unit on Line.

Contour Line Drawing
A contour line defines the edges and surface ridges of an object. It also creates a boundary separating one area from another. A contour line can be continuous or one fluid movement with no picking up of the pencil, or blind where the artist has his/her eyes closed during the duration of the pencil movement.

Expressive Line vs. Directional Lines
Types of Expressive lines: wavy, curly, curvy, dashed, jagged, zig-zag, thin, thick, straight, loopy, etc.
Constructive/Directional Line: Unlike the expressive line, directional lines are very precise. Lines should be all of the same thickness. These lines look as if they are bending and overlapping. They are calculated, constant, and even. Fill the square up!

Line Drawing Assignment
PROJECT GUIDELINES: Chose a lyric from a song that includes both a subject and motion. For example: from the song “Thriller” by Michael Jackson, a possible lyric to build from could be, “…under the moonlight you see a sight that almost stops your heart…” Think about ways to describe this lyric by identifying the emotion of the lyric, who the lyric is about, and what is happening in the lyric. YOU MAY NOT USE ANY VIOLENT, EXPLICIT, SUGGESTIVE, OR INAPPROPRIATE LYRICS.
